The trekking at the Tongariro National Park was unlike any visit to any place. We had spent good eight hours hiking and it was the first destination where we had to stay back. When we reached Auckland, it was afternoon and after a nap for 3 hours, we roamed around the city looking for things that we could take them to India. Late night, it was raining. Well, we were in New Zealand and we had a few more must-see places in our agenda.

Our visit that morning was to the Te Papa Museum, located at Cable Street in Wellington. As we had to travel about 650 kilometers, we started early in the morning by cab, heading through State Highway one. It took us eight hours to reach the Museum of New Zealand. Our timing was exact that we reached half an hour after the opening of the museum. The entry was free.

Built and managed on the principles of the bicultural concept, scholarliness, innovation and diversity, the museum is the blend of past and future. Of course, there is more to this museum, which has six floors showcasing various exhibits devoted to the culture of New Zealand. Within the premises, and in fact, on the grounds, are areas that have wetlands and artificial caves.

Te Papa has some stunning collections of art and photography, swatch books, history, Pacific cultures, Taonga Maori, and natural sciences. When the history collections extend to wide variety of textiles and clothing used by people that go back to as early as the sixteenth century and stamps of from the New Zealand postal archive, Pacific collections contain items of modern and historical items of Pacific Islands.

The natural sciences collections offer exhaustive things of fossils. It was spellbinding to watch innumerable specimen of reptiles, birds, amphibians and mammals. The museum also conducted exhibitions for a fee. Mostly, such exhibitions are related to the history and culture of the country. I figured out from the office that a few of popular ones were about the Maori culture.

The visit to Te Papa Museum was worth experiencing if you are looking for a wealth of knowledge about the history, culture and heritage of New Zealand.
