I took a boat trip to Munkholmen on a lovely summer's day and found it to be full of sun-worshipping visitors all over the lush areas and small sandy beaches. There are regular, guided tours of the historic houses on the tiny island. Boats from downtown run all day long and the tickets are quiet reasonably priced. There is a cafe at this island that serves amazing traditional food. The beach is beautiful and was a big surprise!
The island has served as a place of execution, a monastery, a fortress, prison, and a World War II anti-aircraft gun station. Today, Munkholmen is a popular tourist attraction and recreation site now. In the early 12th century, and possibly even earlier, Benedictine monks lived on the island
The history of the island itself is captivating.... but I'll leave you to learn yourself when you visit! Enjoy!
