Munkholmen Monastery – Norway: A Stunning Destination!

I was nearing the end of my stay at Norway, as I put them all together I realized that this was one of my best vacations that I have ever had. Next and the last on my bucket list was the Munkholmen Monastery. Right from the time I reached Norway my Norwegian friend has been going on about this Monk island .

I took a boat trip to Munkholmen on a lovely summer's day and found it to be full of sun-worshipping visitors all over the lush areas and small sandy beaches. There are regular, guided tours of the historic houses on the tiny island. Boats from downtown run all day long and the tickets are quiet reasonably priced. There is a cafe at this island that serves amazing traditional food. The beach is beautiful and was a big surprise!

The island has quite a deserted feel to it, which I really liked.

The island has served as a place of execution, a monastery, a fortress, prison, and a World War II anti-aircraft gun station. Today, Munkholmen is a popular tourist attraction and recreation site now. In the early 12th century, and possibly even earlier, Benedictine monks lived on the island

The guide we hired was an older gentleman with excellent English and a really pleasing way about him. He managed to bring the island to life through its history. His enthusiasm and knowledge about the island was quiet aspiring. The tour  lasted  around 30 minutes after which I walked around the WWII guns, explored the beach, and had a few drink & appetizers in the delightful little cottage cafe, before the next commuter boat back to 'the mainland'.

The history of the island itself is captivating.... but I'll leave you to learn yourself when you visit! Enjoy!
